Thompson Square Downplays Duets on Just Feels Good

Keifer and Shawna Thompson explore new avenues and share stories of their personal and professional voyage on Just Feels Good, the second album they’ve released as Thompson Square.
“We wanted to really open up our lives to everybody on this album,” Keifer explained. “It’s literally a soundtrack to our lives over the last 13 or 15 years.”
“I’m so proud of this album because they did what is so tough to do: They stayed true to their brand but really pushed themselves creatively,” added Jon Loba, Executive VP, The BBR Music Group, which includes the group’s label, Stoney Creek Records. “It’s a journey of where they’ve been content-wise, but production-wise it is a roller coaster. They had to come with a next-level project and they did. One listen to this album and Thompson Square elevates.”
The married twosome experienced the rush of success with their breakout No. 1, “Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not.” Written by Jim Collins and David Lee Murphy, the single achieved double Platinum for digital downloads and became the most played song at Country radio in 2011, according to Mediabase. In 2012, Thompson Square earned numerous distinctions, including CMA’s Vocal Duo of the Year Award, and a Grammy nomination for Best Country Song and Best Country Duo/Group Performance of the Year.
The duo averages 250 dates a year on the road. As guests on tours with Jason Aldean and Lady Antebellum, they played to more than a million fans. This demanding itinerary taught them some important lessons. For example, Keifer notes that performing onstage night after night helped them understand the importance of building a varied set list, from ballads to feel-good uptempos, in preparation for their future as headliners. Also, opportunities arose for them to explore new outlets, including co-writing a novel, Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not, based on the hit song and released on June 4.
The commercial success, enriched by years of working together before their breakthrough single, informed Thompson Square’s confidence as songwriters and artists. Armed with plenty of creative ammunition, they were ready to start on the follow-up to their self-titled debut, but they could barely find time to begin work on the project.
“They are such hard-working artists that the challenge was to find available days for everyone to sit down and go over songs,” said Loba. “The success of the first album created endless promotion and media opportunities, and they didn’t want to pass on any of them. Consequently, it took nearly a year to record the album, but the end result was a much stronger project. They had a wider array of songs to choose from and were able to dial in even more precisely what they wanted their music to represent.”
In fact, songs that seemed like obvious choices for singles in the early process didn’t even make the final cut, as the quality of the material steadily increased. Keifer and Shawna invited co-writers to join them on the road and took songwriting retreats, including a productive junket to Breckenridge, Colo., with hit tunesmiths Brett James and David Lee Murphy. The Thompsons composed six tracks on Just Feels Good, including the lead single, “If I Didn’t Have You,” with Paul Jenkins and Jason Sellers.
“The project runs the whole gamut that we’ve gone through over the years,” Keifer said, “beginning from the time we met with ‘That’s So Me and You’ (Keifer Thompson, Vicky McGehee and Kyle Jacobs) to the song on the Walmart exclusive album, called ‘What Am I Gonna Do’ (Keifer Thompson, Shawna Thompson, Jacobs and McGehee), about Shawna’s dad passing last year.”
Thompson Square co-produced Just Feels Good with New Voice, the production team made up of Kurt Allison, David Fanning, Tully Kennedy and Rich Redmond. “The major advantage of working with those guys is that they are musicians and they play on the project,” Keifer explained. “They all come to the studio at the same time, and they aren’t just acting as producers. They are physically producing something as well as mentally producing something. They are friends of ours and we get along really well, so working on an album together is really enjoyable.”
Maintaining Thompson Square’s track record at country radio was key to their process in making Just Feels Good. “You’re crazy if you don’t think about radio,” Keifer stated. “Radio is the lifeblood of what we do. It’s changed our lives forever. I can’t tell you how much gratitude we have toward our friends at radio. You have to keep them in mind because they’ve got to play it and get it to the fans. They know what works and what doesn’t work. It’s not the only thing that goes into the equation, but it’s a big component. What we normally do is pretty radio-friendly. You want to push the envelope a little bit, but not so far down the road that no one can see where you’re going. You’ve always got to think about what radio might like, but not to the point where you sacrifice your creativity. You still have to be an artist.”
For the most part, Thompson Square avoids maudlin love songs. “In the past, we’ve been pitched very lovey-dovey stuff, and that’s not what we want,” Keifer said. “That’s not what we write. We tell everybody we don’t want to record duets. Instead, we prefer songs that could be sung by an individual, and then we make them our own. We don’t want to get pigeonholed into duets, because they can be so predictable.”
That same focus drives their approach onstage, including their current run on Luke Bryan’s “Dirt Road Diaries Tour.” “I think people come to our shows expecting a love story the whole show, and then they’re pleasantly surprised by the rockin’ out aspect of what we do,” Keifer said. “We’re not really a stereotypical, boring old married couple. We were both raised out in the country, hunting, fishing and riding 4x4s. We take our motorcycle on the road. We’re a married couple that likes to rock out, and hopefully that’s what we exude onstage.”

Toby Keith’s Hammer Down Tour kicked off last weekend in Cincinnati, featuring Kip Moore and Drake White as special guests. Kip is looking forward to spending the summer out on the road with Toby, not only because he loves being onstage but because he wants an education.
“I’m excited to go out with Toby, because I’ve heard so many different stories about what the tours are like,” he said. “I know he has a big rowdy crowd, and I know he has a different kind of fan base than I probably do, which is why it’s going to be so much fun for me to get out in front of that fan base.”
With Toby’s experience as a headliner, Kip will have plenty of opportunity to learn. “The guy’s been at the top of his game for no telling how many years,” he said. “I mean, 10, 15, 20 years, so I definitely know it’s gonna be something that I can learn a lot from, and I think it’ll definitely better my career going out with him.”
Kip’s latest single, “Hey Pretty Girl,” is nearing the Top 10 at country radio.

Florida Georgia Line just celebrated their second single, “Get Your Shine On,” becoming their second No. 1 hit. With back-to-back chart toppers, the duo make success look easy — but looks can be deceiving.
“You never really know,” Brian Kelley said. “It felt good. We’re blessed enough to get number ones back-to-back. I mean, it’s just a dream come true. To do it once and then to do it again, especially right out the gate. This whole thing is very special to be a part of and we’re not going to take anything for granted.”

They are hoping their new single, “’Round Here,” which was just released to country radio, will follow the same path as “Get Your Shine On” and “Cruise.” Watch the video HERE.

Taylor Swift Twirls with the Rolling Stones

Taylor Swift has performed with musical artists across a variety of genres, often bringing special guests onstage during her live shows. She recently got to play the role of “special guest” when she joined The Rolling Stones at their Chicago show to perform “As Tears Go By” earlier this month. She’s always regarded them as musical heroes, but now she’s an even bigger fan.
“It just was everything that you would think it would be but better,” she said. “They’re now at an even higher level of hero status for me. Mostly because of their attitude. Because of their hospitality. Because they hand-write notes, thanking you for being there. Because you get to get pictures with them and hang out with them.”

One of her favorite moments from the night was getting to twirl around with Mick Jagger. The move came about backstage before the show. “Mick and I were rehearsing the song in a dressing room, with a piano and – we were just kinda goofing around and we started dancing, like over-exaggerated ballet moves,” she said. “And then we started twirling around the room.”

Rain Doesn’t Stop Kenny Chesney in Kansas City

Kenny Chesney photo courtesy of Sony Music Nashville.
Not even torrential rains could keep Kenny Chesney from performing for more than 50,000 fans at Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium Saturday night. Kenny and his team kept a close eye on the storms that rolled through the area at show time, delaying the start of the night by 30 minutes.
“Obviously, we never want anyone to be in danger,” Kenny said. “But we know lots of people plan trips to come together for one of these shows – and you hate for them to lose their travel, their hotels. And selfishly, the fans at Arrowhead Stadium are some of the loudest we play to every year! So, Kacey (Musgraves) went on thirty minutes late and in the rain, like a real trooper – and we got on with the show.”
His dedication and performance was hailed by the Kansas City Star that said of his two-hour set, “…he sang and bounced and prowled across the stage, working up a heavy sweat even in the cool evening air.” It tuned into an evening Kenny won’t soon forget.
“It was one of those nights,” he said. “Maybe because the crowd has to work a little harder to be there, they are really ready to have a good time. But when we hit that stage, they were ready. And by the time we walked off, they’d taken that some place else. That’s how powerful the music you love is: even in a downpour, there’s nowhere else you’d rather be.”
Kenny’s No Shoes Nation Tour has already sold more than a million tickets this year. The tour will roll into Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field this coming Saturday, the same stadium where Kenny kicked off his headlining stadium shows in 2005.
“That’s the power of the No Shoes Nation: rain, sometimes ice, burning heat: they come and they come to rock!” he said. “It’s a long way from playing Knoxville’s Neyland Stadium to the Arrowhead Stadium or Heinz Field – and they’re the reason we can come out, play stadiums and bring this music to life every summer. And there’s nothing like the feeling of hitting that stage every night, and hearing the crowd sing along.”
GAC will give fans an in-depth look at Kenny Chesney and his life both on and offstage in a new documentary, Kenny Chesney: No Shoes Nation premiering Wednesday, June 19 at 10/9c. Produced by Shaun Silva, the special was filmed in Ft. Lauderdale, Key West, Tampa, Jacksonville, St. John and Barbados during tour rehearsals, in the islands, at club gigs, stadiums shows and all sorts of places in between, giving fans a 360 degree picture of what it’s like to be Kenny.

The Band Perry held their second annual fan club party during CMA Music Festival earlier this month and things went a little off the beaten path. Before the trio knew what was happening, they were revealing some of their hidden secrets to the crowd of fans.
See photos of The Band Perry at CMA Music Festival >>
“It somehow turned into ‘True Confessions with The Band Perry,’” Kimberly Perry said. “We told some of our most embarrassing stories on each other, which got a little dangerous.”
Neil Perry showed off his Luke Bryan impression while Kimberly shared a story that got the biggest laugh of the party. “I’ll just make it real simple for you,” Reid Perry said. “We grew up in Mississippi and there is a Pearl River, Mississippi. KP thought Pearl Harbor happened in Mississippi.”
“This was many years ago and it just – I figured that the Pearl River would have a harbor somewhere,” Kimberly tried to explain. “I had a really lousy history teacher growing up.”
The Band Perry is currently a special guest on Rascal Flatts’ Live & Loud Tour.

“Nashville’s songwriters are the best in the world and CMA is excited to return to Boston to showcase some of these spectacular artists again,” Steve Moore, CMA Chief Executive Officer, said. “It’s great to see how this series has grown since it began in 2005, expanding to play in cities across the U.S., and overseas in places like the U.K. and Paris. Boston has given us such a warm reception and we are thrilled to continue to share the remarkable stories behind the hit songs with the terrific fans there.”
Miranda Lambert is the reigning CMA Female Vocalist of the Year and Song of the Year winner for “Over You,” a track co-written by her and husband Blake Shelton. Kip Moore had a hand in co-writing every song on his debut album, Up All Night, and has topped the charts with “Somethin’ ‘Bout A Truck” and “Beer Money.”
Brett James has more than 11 No. 1 hits as a songwriting, including “Jesus Take The Wheel,” performed by Carrie Underwood and “Mr. Know It All,” performed by Kelly Clarkson. Bob DiPiero has penned 15 No. 1 hits including Tim McGraw’s “Southern Voice” and George Strait’s “Blue Clear Sky.”
Tickets are available at ticketmaster.com, or by calling (800) 745-3000. The CMA Songwriters Series will also play in Chicago, Austin, Nashville, and New York with talent to be announced at a later date. For more information on the CMA Songwriters Series visit CMAsongwritersseries.com.

Justin Moore is the proud father of two daughters, Ella and Kennedy. Fatherhood has brought about a number of changes in Justin’s life, including the way he approaches songwriting. His girls have inspired his craft, which he believes was inevitable.

“I’ve always said throughout my career that anything that you do in your personal life or anything you go through, affects the artist and the songwriter that you are,” he said. “Having become a dad over the past few years has definitely changed me and I think it’s been a good thing.”
Justin’s latest single, “Point At You,” is at radio now. It is the lead single from his new album, expected to be released later this year. Watch the “Point At You” video HERE!

Kip Moore photo by Stephen Shepherd, courtesy of UMG Nashville.
Kip Moore has a number of musical artists who have inspired him, but it was weekend fishing trips with his father that formed his early love of lyrics and later inspired him to pursue songwriting.
“He would just play all those classic records – Little River Band, Jackson Browne, Springsteen, Seeger, Willie Nelson, the Red-Headed Stranger, Kristofferson, Sam Cooke,” he said. “He’d be singing the songs and telling us why it was such good music. I looked up to him so much, that’s the music I gravitated towards and that’s what I continue to listen to. Whenever I think about those old fishing trips, that’s what I think about is on the way down there, him singing those songs and all of us singin’ ‘em.”

For Dierks Bentley, his father, who passed away last year, also inspired him to pursue music. Dierks credits his dad for his career today.
“My dad is my biggest influence in country music because my dad loved country radio,” he said. “We always drove around listening to country radio and George Strait, Hank Williams and Randy Travis and all these guys. Without him, I wouldn’t be doing this, that’s for sure.”

When The Band Perry looks at themselves to determine who inherited which trait from their parents, all are in agreement that Neil is most like their father.
“Their mannerisms are just alike,” Reid Perry said. “Not only the way that they’ll talk and walk and sit, but even their hobbies. Both of them are gadget guys. As far as they have the iPad and iPad Mini and the iPhone as well.”

“The details of certain posture things and smiles, laughs…it’s like scarily similar,” Kimberly Perry agrees. According to Neil, he also got his father’s “pretty unbelievable handsomeness trait.”

Father’s Day is Sunday and some of your favorite country stars including Tim McGraw, Trace Adkins, Luke Bryan and Darius Rucker are sharing their best Father’s Day memories. For Luke, his favorite gift is featured on the cover of one of his albums!
Top 20 Country Songs About Dad >>
“One of my best Father’s Day memories is my wife surprised me with my yellow bronco,” he said. “It’s on the cover of the new spring break album. I remember getting home and she had it hidden out back behind the house. That was a fun memory for us. We love the bronco. It’s still in our lives.”
For Darius Rucker, he’s often on the road for Father’s Day. A few years ago though, he happened to be home for the holiday and his two youngest children did something very special for him.
“They brought me breakfast in bed,” he said. “My kids are young and it wasn’t the best breakfast but I just remember waking up and being so touched that the two of them had gotten up early, which they don’t like to do. It wasn’t very good but I ate it all.”

Kenny Chesney Sells More Than 1 Million Tickets on No Shoes Nation Tour

Kenny Chesney photo courtesy of Sony Music Nashville.
Kenny Chesney has gone platinum – in ticket sales! With two months still left in his No Shoes Nation Tour, Kenny has already sold 1,089,000 tickets and is still moving tickets for upcoming dates. He has sold more than a million of them on each of his past 10 tours, but ticket sales aren’t what gets him onstage each night.

GAC is the official media sponsor of Kenny’s No Shoes Nation Tour. Check out photos, videos and more from the tour in our No Shoes Nation Tour section!

“I don’t think about stuff like that,” he said. “All I’m trying to do is make sure that for that one night when people come out to party with us, they forget what’s wrong, they have all the good time they can handle and they go home feeling like they had the best night of their summer. If I can do that with music, then I feel like I’ve done what I set out to do… cause for me, that’s what music is for!”
GAC will give fans an in depth look at Kenny Chesney and his life both on and off stage in a new documentary, Kenny Chesney: No Shoes Nation premiering Wednesday, June 19 at 10/9c.
Over the years, Kenny has mastered the art of walking the line between firing people up and offering them a place where they can release their worries and take time to reflect on their lives with his music.
“I’m glad people hear their lives in this music,” he said. “I am always humbled when people tell me they plan their summer around coming to the show, because I remember being that kind of fan. I try to be the artist I would’ve wanted my favorite singers to be – and make sure that we give people the best show we can every time we get up there. To me, that’s the most important thing… and the fans can tell. Maybe that’s why we’ve hit that million ticket mark so early this year.”
Kenny is currently headlining his No Shoes Nation Tour and GAC wants to send you to his August 3 show in Atlanta! Enter our Kenny Chesney Life On A Rock Sweepstakes daily for your chance to win.The winner will also receive a Kenny Chesney autographed guitar and copy of his Life On A Rock album.
Tim McGraw photo courtesy of The Green Room.
Tim McGraw is a guy’s guy. If he’s not making music, he can often be found watching sports or at the gym. But he lives in a house full of women, including wife Faith Hill and their three daughters, Gracie, Maggie and Audrey, and continues to learn one very important lesson from them.
“Probably the biggest thing that I’m still always working on [with] having a house full of women is learning patience,” he said. “I’ve never been a very patient person so I think either I’m getting mellower with age or they’re teaching me patience. It’s one or the other. I’m not sure which one it is. Probably a combination of both.”
Tim was recently in our studio and he talked about one of his favorite Father’s Days with his daughters. Watch the interview HERE.Top 20 Country Songs About Dad >>
Tim is currently headlining his Two Lanes of Freedom Tour. He recently celebrated his latest No. 1 hit with “Highway Don’t Care” featuring Taylor Swift with Keith Urban on guitar.

Alan Jackson, Keith Urban & Darius Rucker on Being “Dad”

Alan Jackson photo courtesy of Schmidt Relations.
As Father Day approaches, country stars are reflecting on what it means to be a parent, especially what sort of father their own children would say they are. In Alan Jackson’s household, he’s the fun parent to his three daughters with wife Denise.
“We try to be just not pushy hands on parents,” he said. “We let them live and be their own way. I’m not stern with them. I’m funny and light, and try to give them guidance and let them live and learn their own ways. That’s something my parents did. It was accidental, but that’s what they did.”
For Keith Urban, he first has to wrap his head around the fact that he’s “Dad” to young daughters Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret. “The first thing is probably just having someone call you dad,” he said. “I’m like, ‘Omigosh! I’m her dad! That’s amazing.’”
Keith appreciates being a father even more since he waited so long to become one. “I didn’t have kids ‘til later on, and being around it is not the same as having them,” he said. “I realize that it’s not something that can be explained until you actually have it, so I’m glad I got to experience that.”
As for Darius Rucker, he too wins the title of “fun” parent. He’s not afraid to step in and be the bad guy though, something his three children are well aware of. Most importantly, they know he loves them.
“I’m all fun until it’s not fun anymore and then Daddy’s not the fun guy,” he said. “I think that they’d say I was a fun Dad, I’m a loving Dad and I think they would say that. I’m gone so much that when I’m home, I just shower love upon my kids. I say ‘I love you’ probably fifty times a day. We hug, we kiss all the time. I’m always wanting them to know how much I love them. So I’d hope they’d say that I was a loving dad.”

Proceeds from the event will benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Luke Bryan, Randy Houser, Dustin Lynch, Justin Moore, Sam Bush, John Cowan, Radney Foster, Mallary Hope and Joel Crouse all took the stage during the concert.

“I look forward to this event all year long,” Darius said. “I get to share the stage with some of my favorite artists, friends and musical influences. As much fun as it is, it’s all in the spirit of raising support for St. Jude’s, an organization very dear to my heart. Getting to sing with Sam Bush and John Cowan from New Grass Revival, one of the bands that made me want to be a country singer, made the night even more amazing for me.”
Following an introduction from GAC’s Suzanne Alexander, the artists took the stage to perform their own hits before joining Darius for a group cover of the Hank Williams Jr. classic “Family Tradition.” Darius also joined Sam Bush and John Cowan for a rousing rendition of “Callin’ Baton Rouge” and ended the night with an encore performance of his recent two week No. 1, “Wagon Wheel.”
The Darius and Friends Celebrity Golf Tournament which also took place June 4, included celebrity golfers Charles Kelley of Lady Antebellum, Jay DeMarcus and Joe Don Rooney of Rascal Flatts, Colt Ford, JT Hodges, Dustin Lynch, Justin Moore, David Nail, Nashville Predator J.P. Dumont and NASCAR’s Darrell Waltrip.

Gary Allan will give fans an intimate look at both his personal life and his career in Backstory: Gary Allan, premiering on GAC Saturday, July 14, at 10/9c. The special will include never before seen photos of Gary as well as interviews with his team members who have been with him every step of the way.
“I tend to always be a bit more private, but I liked the Backstory concept and the way it gives fans a never-before seen peek behind the curtain of my life,” Gary said. “They’ve interviewed a lot of people and pulled out photos I haven’t seen in years, so I’m looking forward to seeing how it all comes together.”
Gary’s current single, “Pieces,” entered the Top 20 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles Chart this week. He performed the song as well as his recent No. 1 hit “Every Storm Runs Out Of Rain” Sunday night at LP Field during the finale of the CMA Music Festival. He also hosted his annual fan club party aboard the famed General Jackson. See photos of Gary at the CMA Music Festival HERE.

Toby Keith Welcomes Superstar Lineup to His July 6 Oklahoma Twister Relief Concert

Toby Keith photo courtesy of Show Dog-Universal Music.
Toby Keith‘s Oklahoma Twister Relief Concert will be held Saturday, July 6 at the University of Oklahoma’s Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Norman. Doors open at 1:30 p.m., show time is 3 p.m. Tickets go on sale Friday, June 21 at 10 a.m.; all seats are $25, all inclusive, all seats reserved – eight-ticket purchase limit.
The star-studded lineup of performers, now being assembled, will include Garth Brooks, Willie Nelson, Trisha Yearwood, and Ronnie Dunn. Proceeds will benefit The United Way Of Central Oklahoma May Tornadoes Relief Fund. Updates on the event and lineup will be posted at www.tobykeith.com.
For Toby, this event and the May storms that led to it are deeply personal. “I grew up in Moore, I live in Norman and I’ve got lots of family and friends who were directly affected,” he says. “I know these folks and they’re resilient, but we’re going to keep helping them any way we can. I’m proud to get together with some others from around here who are just as committed as I am to supporting these communities.”
“Once we got the news that the tornado had hit Toby’s hometown, Miss Yearwood and I told Toby we were at his service for whatever he chose to do,” Garth says. “I am amazed at the human spirit the tornado victims have shown. I am humbled by the giving of the volunteers. It is an honor to get to be a part of this healing process.”
